Budleigh is a birdwatchers dream. The River Otter has now been designated a wildlife sanctuary with walkways all around and along its beautiful banks. The beach itself is zoned from powered craft, so the only noises to disturb the birds are those from walkers.
As you would expect, within a wildlife sanctuary, there are some stunning walks within and around the vicinity of the town. One of the most popular is a a walk that takes you along the river, through the countryside and along the coast, all within a six and a half mile radius. The walk begins at the Lime Kiln car park on the sea front and takes you inland to White Bridge and then for a stretch along the River Otter. Passing the aqueduct, the walk allows you to cross the river at Clamour Bridge and inland across fields. Walkers will end up at Chislebury Bay or brandy Head, depending on the route they take and from here there are a number of routes back to the White Bridge and the Lime Kiln Car Park. A detailed listing of this walk is available from the Budleigh Tourist Information Centre in a leaflet entitled "A Guide to Walks in East Devon".
Within the town itself there is plenty to occupy visitors. The Fairlynch Museum, a delightful, thatched building at the southern end of the town's high street gives a fascinating insight into local history. It reveals a far from serene picture of the past, including a 400 year old history of smuggling along this southern coastline. Additionally, the painting made by John Everett Millais entitled the boyhood of Raleigh is housed within the museum.
The annual Budleigh Salterton Gala Week is organised by the local Lions Club and supported by the whole town.
Events run all week and include dog shows, mad hatters tea party, an open air bar-b-que, a country & western evening, a fishing competition, an ugly bug ball, a junior talent contest, line dancing, a quiz evening, and lots of events for the family.
