The Abbeyfield (Axminster) Society Ltd was the first
Abbeyfield Society in Devon and Cornwall. It was formed in 1963 and Abbeyfield
House was opened in Silver Street in 1964. Abbeyfield House, Silver Street The property was formerly the vicarage and is situated adjacent to the church and close to the shops, the post office and all the facilities of the town. The house was completely refurbished in 1992 and provides comfortable sitting rooms for all the residents. Also provided are en-suite toilet and shower facilities with additional bathrooms for the use of those to whom this is preferable. |

Facilities All rooms are carpeted but all furniture and furnishings are owned and provided by the residents. Television points and telephone outlets are also installed in each room. Meals Two main meals are provided in the dining room each day and individual requirements for breakfast are supplied to each resident so that they can enjoy this meal as and when they wish. Care The administration of the Society is undertaken by a volunteer executive committee. A house committee has the responsibility for the day to day working of the house through the staff, which comprises the Housekeeper and deputy, plus cleaning staff as necessary. 24 hour cover is not provided but someone always sleeps in the house at night and each resident has a live connection to the District Council emergency helpline. Nursing care is not provided but the normal domiciliary care is available from the National Health Service and other appropriate sources. Complete freedom of movement and activity is the right of every Abbeyfield resident and their room is their own private domain to be entered only by invitation. Accommodation Accommodation is available for eight persons, six on two floors in the main house and two in a recently built single storey extension overlooking the garden. Charges Current charges are generally £539 per calendar month subject to adjustment. Residency is available to all, irrespective of sex, religion or ethnic origin but subject to the rules and regulations of the Society. The charge covers all food, lighting, heating, insurance, council tax, water charges & maintenance. Where appropriate, financial assistance is usually available from local government sources in accordance with the scales laid down in the regulations. There is a guest room available at charges appropriate at the time. The Society The Society, as a member of the national Abbeyfield Society conducts its affairs in accordance with the standards laid down and agreed and is subject to and abides by all legislation applicable to the provision of sheltered housing and the findings of the Independent Housing Ombudsman.
